Like “Game of Thrones,” the reality series “Survivor” is a supreme battle of alliances, backstabbing and social politics. In both games you either win or die (get voted out). The castaways on “Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X” not fighting for the iron throne but the title of “Sole Survivor.” Last week’s episode in the Game of Survivor, “The Truth Works Well,” saw Jessica ‘Figgy’ Figueroa (listen to her exit interview podcast) get blindsided. This made me wonder if her on island love interest, Taylor Stocker, will become the Robb Stark (Richard Madden) of Fiji.
Robert started “Game of Thrones” as the most powerful man in Westeros, ruling from the iron throne. Similarly, Paul started out this season of “Survivor” reigning over the Gen X tribe as their leader. Both were old school men’s men. But both also grew into a complacency that meant they were not long for their respective games.
Robb Stark looked like he in a good position on “Game of Thrones.” A strong player that was likable enough. Then came a little thing called love. His rushed marriage led to breaking trust and freying his alliance with Walder Frey. This resulted in the infamous red wedding where Frey had Robb’s wife killed before taking arrows and swords to Robb himself.
On “Survivor,” Taylor was also a strong and likable player that fell for a girl. When he started a romantic relationship with Figgy it annoyed his tribemates. It led fellow millennial Adam to question whether he could trust both of them. At this week’s tribal council Adam shocked the lovers by switching allegiance and blindsiding Figgy.
Fortunately for Taylor, unlike a “Game of Thrones” wedding, you can only take one player out of “Survivor” at a time. So Taylor lives to fight another day. Time will tell whether he will suffer the same fate as Robb Stark or lives to see his revenge.
