On Sunday night Jessica Lange won Best Actress in a Play for playing Mary Tyrone in Eugene O’Neill‘s classic drama “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” and that’s due in no small part to Ryan Murphy, the mastermind who also guided her to two Emmys wins in his “American Horror Story” franchise.
“I’ve loved working with him, and I’ve loved the characters he’s created for me,” said Lange of her relationship with Murphy. “One night we were sitting at dinner, and I happened to mention to him that Mary Tyrone, whom I played 16 years ago in London, remained the greatest part I ever had. I said how much I would like to revisit it because I always find … you bring something back to it when you revisit a role. The next thing I knew, he had secured the rights and then we brought it to the Roundabout. So it was through his good friendship and graces that we did this production.”
This was Lange’s first Tony nomination and win. Having also won three Emmys and two Oscars, she now join the ranks of triple-crown acting champs, and she’s just a Grammy away from completing her EGOT (tour our photo gallery here of who needs a Grammy for an EGOT).
