It’s official: Lifetime is falling in love with “UnReal.” Just days before Season 2 premieres June 6, the cable network has renewed the critical darling for a 10-episode third season. Critics’ Choice winner Constance Zimmer took to Twitter to share the news, writing “Super Duper” along with a fun selfie of star Shiri Appleby and director Peter O’Fallon. Created by Marti Noxon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro (“The Bachelor”), “UnReal” details the manipulation that goes on in the reality television industry through the guise of a fictional dating show called “Everlasting.” In our recent webchat with Zimmer, she gave us an exciting tease about Season 2 that goes “darker and further than we went in Season 1.”
In addition to Zimmer’s victory at the Critics’ Choice Awards, “UnReal” has been recognized with a Peabody and an AFI honor as a Television Program of the Year. Will Emmys follow suit? Lifetime and A+E Studios officially jump-started this Emmy Awards season by sending the full 10-episode first season to members of the TV academy way back in January. Now, the timing of Season 2 couldn’t be more perfect, as it will air right during the midst of Emmy voting.
