“It is our sacred duty to defend the world, and it’s what I’m going to do,” says Gal Gadot as Diana Prince aka “Wonder Woman” in a new trailer released by Warner Bros. Pictures on Thursday, November 4 (watch it above). The film opens June 2, 2017.
“Wonder Woman” is the next in the expanded DC Extended Universe that started in 2013 with the Superman film “Man of Steel,” but this is actually the character’s second appearance. She made her grand entrance in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016 when the Amazonian princess was drawn into the conflict between DC Comics’ most famous heroes.
The “Wonder Woman” film takes place decades before the events of “Batman v. Superman” and introduces Diana on an island where she is training to become a warrior. But American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on the island and draws her into another epic conflict — in this case World War I.
While Zack Snyder directed “Man of Steel” and “Batman v. Superman,” as well as 2017’s “Justice League,” which will feature Wonder Woman again, this film is directed by Patty Jenkins, the filmmaker best known for directing Charlize Theron to a Best Actress Oscar win in “Monster” (2003). Will she bring a fresh perspective to the DC universe, and will she finally convince critics, who have been slow to embrace the DC franchise even as audiences flock to the films?
