The American Music Awards announced their 2017 nominees on Thursday, October 12, and now you can predict the winners in all 28 categories right here. These nominations were decided based on album and song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring, and social media engagement, but winners will be decided by music fans voting online. Can you outdo all other users in forecasting these 45th annual kudos?
Bruno Mars leads the nominations this year with eight bids, including Artist of the Year, where he competes against the electronic dance music duo The Chainsmokers, rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. All five artists have won AMAs before save Lamar, but none have yet prevailed as Artist of the Year. Last year’s champ, Ariana Grande, is out of the running this time around, and the winner in the two previous years (2014-2015), One Direction, has disbanded, with one former One Directioner, Niall Horan, now up for New Artist of the Year as a solo artist.
So who has the edge? Perhaps we can look to another recent fan-voted music event, the MTV Video Music Awards. Lamar was the big winner at those kudos, taking Video of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Video for “Humble,” but in the VMAs race for Artist of the Year Lamar and Mars were bested by Sheeran. Could we see a repeat of that match-up at the AMAs? Drake could complicate matters; he’s been on a roll, having won four awards out of 12 nominations just last year. And The Chainsmokers are so popular that they spent 61 straight weeks in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart between 2016 and 2017.
