British Independent Film Awards nominations: ‘Three Billboards’ among leading contenders

Nominations for the 20th British Independent Film Awards were announced on Nov. 1 in London. To be eligible for consideration, a film must be intended for theatrical release, produced or co-produced by a British company and have a budget of under 10 million pounds. This year’s contenders are led by “Lady Macbeth” with a jaw-dropping 15 nominations followed by “The Death of Stalin” and “I Am Not a Witch” with a lucky 13 bids each and 11-time nominee “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.” (Scroll down to see the complete list of nominations)

The latter’s leading lady, Oscar frontrunner Frances McDormand, contends for Best Actress while featured players Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell number among the Best Supporting Actor nominees. And Martin McDonagh , who won a BIFA in 2008 for his “In Bruges” screenplay, reaped bids for both his helming and scripting.

The British Independent Film Awards will take be handed out on December 10 at a ceremony at London’s Old Billingsgate that will be presided over by Mark Gatiss (“Sherlock”).
