In the 2017 Emmy races for Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Actor, our experts at Gold Derby favor Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) to win. But are these two frontrunners unstoppable? Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil is joined by Anne Thompson (Indiewire) and Pete Hammond (Deadline) to discuss the lead acting races in our new video slugfest.
Louis-Dreyfus faces off against Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”), Allison Janney (“Mom”), Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”), Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Jane Fonda (“Grace and Frankie”) for Best Comedy Actress. As for Best Comedy Actor, Glover contends opposite Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”), William H. Macy (“Shameless”), Zach Galifianakis (“Baskets”), Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”) and Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”).
“She’s still gonna win,” smiles Thompson about Emmy darling Louis-Dreyfus. “She’s just brilliant, you know? You love her, you hate her, she can’t help but make you laugh and she keeps improving. What can we say? She’s unstoppable.”
On the actor side Hammond surmises, “I think this is where you go with ‘Atlanta’ and you go with Donald Glover. He’s gonna win something. You know, he could win in writing. He could [win both].”
