2017 Emmys reactions: Cheers for winners, boos for losers, and as for Stephen Colbert … ? [UPDATING LIVE]

Our witty, knowledgeable and occasionally downright ruthless forum posters held nothing back when reacting to the 69th annual Primetime Emmys Sunday night. This year’s ceremony had many cheering and others outraged when it came to the night’s big winners and losers. What were the most shocking upsets of the night? Which winners were most worthy? Which losses left people fuming? And how did Stephen Colbert fare as host?

Our forum posters, many of whom are Hollywood insiders who hide their identities behind screen names, were busy commenting on these top TV honors. As you can see from just a sample of their comments below, they hold nothing back when reacting to this ceremony that aired live coast-to-coast on CBS.

While some readers cheered a win, others were outraged that a rival nominee lost. And they certainly weighed in on Colbert, who has won nine Emmys to date but never emceed these awards until now. What did you think were the best and worst moments of the night? See if someone in our forums agrees with your opinion about the most worthy winners and the most shocking upsets as well as the overall quality of the telecast.

Below is just a sampling of the praise and shade that went down in Gold Derby’s fun and feisty TV forums. Join the discussion and share your opinion.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES:

AayaanUpadhyaya: So casting is no longer important and needed to win Drama Series. Amazing.

PJ Edwards: Hulu has arrived

Teridax: I can’t believe the all-around ACTUAL Best Drama Series won Drama Series! Amazing! The Handmaid’s Tale Season 1 winning makes it easily one of the Top 5 winners of this category of all time.

Lance: The academy went crazy for Handsmaids Tale! Three acting wins! GOT will have a battle on its hands. Very interesting fight to look forward to next year.

ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES: Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

LaChienne: Moss with an Emmy in hand is so, so right!

mafro987: is it only me that’s really annoyed by the constant ‘You Don’t Own Me’ music for The Handmaid’s Tale? That song belongs to Sister Mary Eunice.

ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES: Sterling K. Brow, “This Is Us”

Bee: This Is Us is so overrated but I loved Sterling’s performance.

GusCruz: This is an insane choice. I think even Spacey puts more effort into his performance.

OscarsSoWrong: Wow they’re really going to play him out like that? Nicole Kidman got a whole f****** segment. F*** off Emmy’s

OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES: “Big Little Lies”

KarlVillalobos: I am so happy that Reese won something tho! She was amazing in BLL.

OUTSTANDING TELEVISION MOVIE: “Black Mirror: San Junipero”

Cobalt Blue: San Junipero!!  BEST tv episode of the year. And that music, haha, obvious but perfect

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE: Nicole Kidman, “Big Little Lies”

lovelylovely: I love Nicolegend Kidman

Lance: I have never been a fan of Nicole Kidman but wow that speech was amazing. Maybe she’s finally won me over.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE: Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of”

jf123: Happy Riz won, but really disappointed Fargo got shut out this year.

Miles Allen: I’m just glad the Emmys had enough self control not to just award Robert De Niro just because he’s De Niro.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES: “Veep”

Jw79Bull: I don’t get Veep…..oh well

LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”

cnmem10: Julia the Queen Bitches………

Sagand: Julia the Queen Bitches………

Sasha: Please Debra, dethrone this greedy bitch next year.

LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES: Donald Glover, “Atlanta”

Atypical: Donald Glover took down Jeffrey Tambor! Let’s upset Julia next!

OUTSTANDING VARIETY TALK SERIES: “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”

DIRECTING FOR A VARIETY SERIES: “Saturday Night Live”

WRITING FOR A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE: “Black Mirror: San Junipero”

LaChienne: BLACK MIRROR #SLAYYYYYYY

DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES: “The Handmaid’s Tale – ‘Offred (Pilot)’

Sasha: Couldn’t they be more obvious with all those wins for The Handmaid’s Tale? Yes, Emmy voters, we get it. You hate Trump.

OUTSTANDING REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM: “The Voice”

Atypical: Awwww. “Drag Race” was robbed.

WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES: Aziz Ansari, Lena Waithe, “Master of None – ‘Thanksgiving'”

True Tenor: Aziz and Lena!!! Well at least people of color are being honored for their work behind the cameras.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES: Ann Dowd, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

Bee: Yay to Ann but ugh I’m crushed for Thandie.

erbear: Let the record be shown she doesn’t need a speech because her genuineness is making me feel things

joesilver: Finally we have a shocking win. Aunt Lydia!!!

WRITING FOR A VARIETY SERIES: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE: Alexander Skarsgard, “Big Little Lies”

GusCruz: This guy is such a mediocre actor. He owes this to Kidman, who elevated the perception of his performances by the sheer power of her magnetic presence.

Xtina: Honey, this obsession with Big Little Lies is disgusting. #Barf

sofan: YAASSSSS Alexander deserves this and you all who doubt can suck it. BLL sweep is happening, but which one of the women wins the Lead Actress?

DIRECTING FOR A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE: “Big Little Lies”

Teridax: “sigh” I predicted The Night Of to upset in Directing but seeing how the show is going currently I realize that Jean-Marc Vallee is probably a lock for Big Little Lies after all. I’m SO GLAD that I didn’t switch today from BLL to TNO for Writing and/or Limited Series.

Sagand: Did they actually count the votes or just go by GoldDerby odds?

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES: Alec Baldwin, “Saturday Night Live”

AAyaanUpadhyaya: Could Titus pull of a shocker? I really don’t want Baldwin winning this ugh

Zooey the Dreamer: I hate these winners. They go for all front-runners. I miss last year. This will be like 2015. They’ll vote for all front-runners. Bring tapes back! I can’t believe they gave an Emmy to Alec Baldwin for …. WHAT?!

EmmyWinner: Ugh Baldwin…Night officially ruined. Worst winner since Jon Cryer.

WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES: “The Handmaid’s Tale – ‘Offred (Pilot)'”

Lord Freddy Blackfyre: So Undeserved

cnmem10: Hell yeah Handmaid’s Tale Awesome

Teridax: I screamed in pure joy! The Handmaid’s Tale is sweeping everyone! I placed one of my Super Bets on it beating Stranger Things for for Drama Series, and I am feeling really good about that right now.

VARIETY SKETCH SERIES: “Saturday Night Live”

Sasha: SNL… of course… I think I barfed a little in my mouth…

DIRECTING COMEDY SERIES: Donald Glover, “Atlanta”

Bee: Yaaasss Donald!

KarlaVillalobos: Donald, MEH.

Atypical: Donald Glover just did THAT! Taking down those “Veep” guys lol!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE: Laura Dern, “Big Little Lies”

pulp50: AAAAAHHHHGO LAURA! I’m crying, I love her so much. Thank you emmys, this makes my life.

Hunter-ish: F***. Regina was robbed. Oh well, I loved Dern on Twin Peaks so I’ll consider this a win for that.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES: Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live”

Teridax: Go Kate McKinnon!

erbear: I wanted the girl from My Girl to win…every time I see her I still feel bad about that whole Bee incident with Thomas J

pulp50: Judith Light is better, but McKinnon is great too. I really hate the announcer.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES: John Lithgow, “The Crown”

lovelylovely: John Lithgow! The best of the best!

Bee: I took a last minute unnecessary risk having Jones as the winner.

OPENING

EmmyWinner: Lame opening number lol

Miles Allen: I have not laughed this entire time.

LegendOfMatt: Lol love the Ted Cruz joke.

erbear: Lip Synching is not better on TV Stephen. (It’s best when you are watching Mariah Carey sing one of her 90’s hits)

OscarsSoWrong: Holy F*** Sean Spicer! Ok this just got good!

BenitoDelicias: Sean Spicer! That was shocking. People lost their sh** in that audience including Melissa McCarthy.
