One of the biggest questions at these awards, much like the Emmys that will follow on September 17, is what will happen in the absence of “Game of Thrones.” The HBO epic fantasy series has won our award for Best Drama Series for the last two years in a row, but it didn’t return for its seventh season until this summer, which was after the May 31 eligibility cutoff. That means it’s sitting out this contest, so several shows are hoping to capitalize, including last year’s challenger “The Leftovers,” as well as five new shows: “The Crown,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Stranger Things,” “This is Us,” and “Westworld.”
In the race for Best Comedy Series, the question is whether “Veep” can defend its title. It won for the first time in 2016, and this year it too faces a challenge from a couple of critically acclaimed newcomers: FX’s “Atlanta” and Amazon’s “Fleabag.”
Meanwhile, Best Limited Series could give us a preview of the upcoming Emmy showdown between HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan.” They’re tied with eight total nominations — more than any other movie or miniseries — so they may be tough to beat. However, don’t count out challengers “Fargo,” “The Night Of,” and “American Horror Story: Roanoke.”
Who do you think will win? Who are you hoping will win? There were major categories that were decided by less than a handful of votes, so if you submitted a ballot then you might very well have tipped the scales for your favorite program.
