Watch our editors and writers dish the big news of the 2017 SAG Awards, which honored the best performances in film and TV from the calendar year 2016 — including “Hidden Figures” as Best Film Ensemble. Watch our post-show slugfest above.
The SAG Awards for film are one of the most important stops on the Oscar season campaign trail. Eleven of the 21 previous winners of Best Film Ensemble went on to claim the Best Picture Oscar (52%). The other film categories match up with Oscar even more often: 82% of SAG Best Actor winners, 73% of Best Actress winners, 68% of Best Supporting Actress winners and 59% of Best Supporting Actor winners have gone on to claim Oscar.
But the SAG Awards also honor the best in TV, where they frequently disagree with the Emmys. This year “Orange is the New Black” won its third straight prize for Best TV Comedy Ensemble, William H. Macy (“Shameless”) took Best TV Comedy Actor and Bryan Cranston (“All the Way”) was named Best TV Movie/Mini Actor after they were overlooked at last fall’s Emmys.
But these awards might also preview the next Emmys. Freshman series “Stranger Things” won Best TV Drama Ensemble and fellow Netflix newcomer “The Crown” won individual acting honors for John Lithgow and Claire Foy.
