Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”) is the reigning Golden Globe champion for Best TV Comedy Actress, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t usually like to repeat itself. No one has won this category twice for one role since Tina Fey went back-to-back for “30 Rock” in 2008 and 2009. That may be why our users so strongly favor a pair of actors who would be first-time winners: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep“) and Debra Messing (“Will & Grace”).
As of this writing Louis-Dreyfus leads our predictions with odds of 2/1. That includes support from 19 of our Top 24 Users, who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Globe nominations, and 17 of our All-Star Top 24, who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ predictions. It seems like it should be a no-brainer to forecast Louis-Dreyfus at any and every awards event; she has won a record six Emmys and two SAG Awards for her role as Selina Meyer in “Veep.” But she has never actually won a Globe for this performance. She did win Best TV Supporting Actress for “Seinfeld,” but that was way back in 1994, so when the 2018 Globes roll around it will have been 24 years since she was rewarded by the HFPA.
Messing might be even more overdue, having earned eight Globe nominations without a victory in any category. She earned six bids in this race for “Will & Grace” (2000-2005) and then two more for “The Starter Wife” (Best Movie/Mini Actress in 2008, Best TV Comedy Actress in 2009). “Will & Grace” never won a single Globe out of 27 nominations, so it has a big IOU to cash in now that it has been revived by NBC after 11 years off the air. Messing is currently close behind Louis-Dreyfus in our predictions with 3/1 odds, including support from five of our Top 24 and four of our All-Stars.
Do you agree with our predictions that Louis-Dreyfus and Messing are out front, or are we underestimating any of their rivals?
