The paint is barely dry on the 2018 Golden Globe nominations, which were announced on Monday morning, December 11, but hundreds of users have already weighed in with their predictions for who will win. That includes our Top 24 Users, who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Golden Globe winners. And though Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”) was the frontrunner for Best TV Comedy Actor going into the nominations, our Top 24 think Kevin Bacon (“I Love Dick”) is the frontrunner coming out of them.
But it’s an incredibly close race. As of this writing 10 of our Top 24 are predicting Bacon, compared to nine who are predicting Ansari, three who are betting on Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), and two who are forecasting a win for Eric McCormack (“Will and Grace”). The latter three are on shows with corresponding Globe noms for Best TV Comedy Series, which usually foretells which acting contenders are the strongest, but Bacon ticks a couple of important boxes that might point to him as the real Globes favorite.
For starters, Bacon is the only nominee in this category from a freshman series, and the Golden Globes love to be the first to honor a new show and its performers. Second, Bacon is a movie star doing TV, and starry-eyed Globe voters often gravitate to A-listers on the small screen, like past champs in this category Don Cheadle (“House of Lies,” 2013) and Gael Garcia Bernal (“Mozart in the Jungle,” 2016). Third, Bacon has a proven track record at the Globes, winning Best Movie/Limited Series Actor for “Taking Chance” in 2010, even after he had already been bested at the Emmys the previous fall by Brendan Gleeson (“Into the Storm”).
