Saoirse Ronan is predicted to reap an Oscar nomination for her star turn as a Sacramento teenager preparing for life after high school in the coming-of-age comedy “Lady Bird.” Her first big stop on the campaign trail will be the Golden Globes, where she’s way out front to win Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress according to the predictions of our experts.
These journalists cover the film awards beat year-round and, as of this writing, nine of them are forecasting a victory for Ronan: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Michael Musto (NewNowNext), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), and Adnan Virk (ESPN).
Ronan has two previous Globe nominations: Best Supporting Actress for “Atonement” in 2008 and Best Drama Actress for “Brooklyn” in 2016; she lost both of those Globes bids as well as the corresponding Oscar races. “Lady Bird” is written and directed by Greta Gerwig, who earned a Golden Globe nomination in this category for “Frances Ha” in 2014.
Ronan’s closest competitor is the reigning Globes champ, Emma Stone, for her role as feminist tennis champ Billie Jean King in “Battle of the Sexes.” Two Experts — Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com) — think Stone will win again after taking the prize last yearfor “La La Land” on her way to a Best Actress victory at the Oscars.
Our last Expert, Edward Douglas (Tracking Board), anticipates a win for Margot Robbie for her biographical role as figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” This would be her first Golden Globe nomination and win.
