Maren Morris is nominated for six Academy of Country Music Awards this year and says of her windfall, “I was definitely bowled over because the ACMs last year were the first awards show I had ever gotten to go to … I felt like a fan just sitting in the audience last year, so to be nominated six times this year and be up there with my girl [Miranda Lambert] and then [Keith Urban] who I was on tour with last year … I feel like I’m in a class with all my buddies.” Watch more of her interview with CBS above.
Morris’s ACM Awards breakthrough includes nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year (as artist and producer for “Hero”) and Single Record of the Year (as artist and producer for “My Church”). Her sixth category was already announced, and she was the winner: New Female Vocalist of the Year.
The country newcomer launched her career with her major label debut album, “Hero,” which was released in June 2016. That brought her to the attention of the CMA Awards, which awarded her New Artist of the Year and also nominated her for Album, Single and Song of the Year (also for “Hero” and “My Church,” respectively).
That was followed by four Grammy nominations including Best New Artist and a victory for Best Country Solo Performance (“My Church”). It’s hard for her to articulate her Grammy experience. She explains, “I think I’ve dreamt about singing on stage at the Grammys, but when you’re back there and passing by Adele, Beyonce and Stevie Wonder, it’s really hard to put that into words and say to yourself that that really happened because it sounds like a fever dream.”
New she’s set to finish her victory lap in her first (but probably not her last) awards cycle. Some of the pressure is off since she’s already a winner, and a year after experiencing the ACM Awards as a fan she’ll get to experience them on stage as one of the show’s most eagerly anticipated performers. Do you think she’ll win the rest of her nominations?
