“It’s totally different for me,” says Dierks Bentley about the challenging task of hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards with Luke Bryan for the second straight year. He and Bryan discussed their return to the ACMs stage with CBS (watch above). “We spend all our time on stage playing songs and get to be really good at this one particular thing on the road with our fans and live shows. This is totally different — makes you respect everyone that’s ever done it before … We think we’re funny. We do monologues on stage after we’ve had a few drinks, but it’s a totally different deal.”
Bryan will be hosting the awards for the fifth time; before joining forces with Bentley in 2016 he emceed three times with Blake Shelton (2013-2015). He thinks that the Las Vegas locale, where the event will be held at the T-Mobile Arena, is a big part of the event’s appeal. “The fans are coming out there, and you can feel it in the room,” he explains. “Everybody is excited to be in Vegas. It’s fun. It’s a big party.”
Both Bentley and Bryan will have more to think about than just their hosting duties. They’re also nominees at the event. Bryan is up for Entertainer of the Year, which he has won twice before (2013, 2015). And Bentley contends three times, for Album of the Year (“Black”), Vocal Event of the Year (“Different for Girls” with Elle King) and Male Vocalist of the Year. Do you think they’ll both be winners?
