As part of its rollout last fall, six-time Oscar winner “La La Land” screened at the AFI Fest in Hollywood in early November. Likewise for “Jackie” and “Moana,” which reaped multiple Oscar bids. Also part of last year’s line-up of 118 entries were Oscar hopefuls “Patriots Day,” “Rules Don’t Apply” and “Miss Sloane.”
Last year’s diverse range of programming drew from 46 countries. Beyond the star-studded premieres, this outreach program of the American Film Institute showcases documentaries and experimental films. And it can be used as a means to qualify entries for both the live action and animated short Oscar categories.
This year’s festival is set for November 9 to November 16. The rolling deadlines for submission are March 31 (early); May 5 (official) and July 14 (final).
