Alessia Cara is the early Grammy frontrunner for Best New Artist

We opened our Grammy predictions for Best New Artist at the end of October, and there are already hundreds of users making their bets on the state of the race. According to their early picks Alessia Cara is out front to win with leading odds of 21/10. Do you agree that the 21-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter is the one to beat? Grammy voters are often biased towards solo female artists in this race.

Our predictions are based on the combined forecasts of all users at Gold Derby, including the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Grammy nominations and the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine their predictions from the last two years. Not all of our top users have chimed in with their predictions yet, but all 12 out of 12 of our Top 24 so far predict Cara will be nominated, with eight of them predicting she’ll win. All 12 of our All-Stars so far also predict she’ll be nominated with nine of them forecasting a victory.

The Grammys have long preferred solo female artists in the New Artist race. To date, 25 solo women have won the award, with 17 of those coming in just the last 30 years. Recent years have skewed towards men, with four of the last five winners being male acts, but that’s more the exception than the rule. If this is another year for a male artist, though, it will probably be Khalid, who just won New Artist at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and ranks second in our Grammy predictions with 11/4 odds. Fellow R&B singer SZA follows in third place with 14/5 odds. Rounding out our predicted list nominees are pop star Julia Michaels (7/2 odds) and rapper Logic (4/1 odds).

Be sure to make your Grammy nomination predictions so that Hollywood record executives and top name stars can see how their songs and albums are faring in our Grammy odds. Don’t be afraid to jump in now since you can keep changing your predictions until just before nominees are announced on November 28. And join in the fierce debate over the 2018 Grammys taking place right now with Hollywood insiders in our music forums. Read more Gold Derby entertainment news.
