The pilot for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is already available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, but now the streaming service is ordering more of the series — a lot more. Amazon has picked it up for two seasons, which is the streaming service’s first ever multi-season order for a new show.
“Mrs. Maisel” was created, written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino, best known to TV fans as the mastermind behind the fast-talking “Gilmore Girls” and its recent Netflix revival “A Year in the Life.” The new series stars Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a New York City woman in the 1950s who blazes a trail as a stand-up comedian. The actress previously earned an Emmy nomination for her breakthrough role on “House of Cards” as Rachel Posner, a young woman entangled in a political conspiracy. Michael Zegen co-stars as Midge’s husband, while Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle play her parents.
Since the pilot began streaming on March 17 it has received five stars from a remarkable 92% of viewers who rated it, and it currently has an average customer rating of 4.8 out of 5. Joe Lewis, Amazon Studios head of comedy, drama and VR, said in a statement, “In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause. Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an easy decision to order two seasons from Amy and her incredible cast. We can’t wait to bring it to customers soon.”
Is Midge as marvelous as they say? You can watch the pilot with Amazon Prime and decide for yourself.
