‘American Idol’: 12 dream judges are Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande … and Ricky Gervais?! [POLL]

If “American Idol” really is being rebooted by NBC, the long-running reality TV show will need to fill its three empty judges’ chairs. While we’d love to see Fox’s original trio of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson back again, it’s unlikely the Peacock net would want to drudge up the past. Instead, NBC is more likely to take a “Voice” approach and hire chart-topping music artists to critique the next batch of aspiring singers. With that in mind, take a look at our Top 12 “American Idol” dream judges and then vote in our poll below with YOUR pick.

Justin Bieber — Love him or hate him, Bieber brings in ratings, and he’s exactly the kind of artist NBC will be looking for if the “American Idol” reboot ever comes to fruition. Cue the crying girls!

Selena Gomez — Forgetting the drama of her being Bieber’s ex-girlfriend, Gomez has come into her own as a pop music sensation in the past few years. To take a title from her hit single, she will be so “good for you,” NBC.

Ariana Grande — Music sensation? Check. TV star? Check. Pop culture icon? Check. If “American Idol” doesn’t ask this “dangerous woman” to be a part of their new judging panel, they’re officially insane.

Taylor Swift — Would Swift ever consider taking a break from her worldwide fame to sit in a chair for months on end? Hey, if Miley Cyrus and Pharrell Williams can do it for “The Voice,” we have a feeling Swift would be game.

Beyonce — We’d love to see Queen Bey take on a mentoring job and help shape the lives of young artists. Plus, as her family continues to grow, perhaps Beyonce would be keen to take a day-to-day job like “American Idol” in order to stay closer to home.

Adele — The world loves Adele for her voice and stage presence, but her personality is what really makes her perfect for “American Idol.” Like original British judge Cowell, Adele would have no problem telling contestants what she really thinks.

Kanye West — The current President of the United States got his start on an NBC reality show, so why shouldn’t West — who’s hinted at a 2020 presidential run — want to put in his time doing a similar job?

Drake — His on-again, off-again relationship with former “American Idol” star Jennifer Lopez might make him a controversial choice to judge, but Drake would undoubtedly bring in countless new viewers to the long-running show.

Lady Gaga — After winning the Golden Globe for “American Horror Story: Hotel” and killing it in her Oscar performance of “Til it Happens to You,” Lady Gaga just recently stole the Super Bowl with her halftime show. She’s. On. Fire.

Justin Timberlake — Timberlake’s two Emmy wins for hosting “Saturday Night Live” and his countless viral videos on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” prove that Timberlake is great on camera and more than just your everyday music artist.

Kelly Clarkson — This one is a no-brainer. As the original “American Idol” winner back in 2002, Clarkson is arguably the most respected and talented person to ever come out of reality television. She also guest-judged “Idol” in its final season, so she’s already battle-tested.

Ricky Gervais — Our wildcard pick isn’t known for his music talent, but neither was Cowell. We think Gervais would be a perfect choice to sit in Cowell’s seat since he’s hilarious, biting and above all, brutally honest. Just ask all those celebs he roasted at the Golden Globes.

“American Idol” had an up-and-down history at the Emmys throughout its 15-year run, winning only eight times from its 67 nominations. Ryan Seacrest was recognized as Best Reality Host seven times, losing to Jeff Probst (“Survivor”) in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Stars”) in 2012, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn (“Project Runway”) in 2013 and RuPaul Charles (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) last year.

  1. The fact that Selena Gomez is leading really says something. She would be an awful judge. If they are not going to bother hiring people who will actually critique the singing they might as well just leave it off the air.

  2. Your suggested selection of “new” judges will doom the restart of American Idol, before it begins. The 3 previous judges were a crucial element to making the show great.

    1. really? the last set of judges were there as the ratings went down, especially J-Lo – OK, she was not as bad and Mariah and Nikki, but still, she spent a lot of time performing, i.e. not singing, she really doesn’t sing, but shakes her butt. That took time away from the kids. The show ran forever, but still had very little of the contestants singing. How about new judges, that are not performers, but know how to sing and can give constructive criticism, and more solo singing by the kids so you can hear and judge them, not with other people that makes it hard to judge, but by themselves. With no bagpipes, but music where you can hear them sing. If they want them to sing in groups, they can do it on a non-judge day. I also do not need to see the camera focused on J-lo’s breasts while a contestant is singing. Harry was ok the first yea, but then they all had to be good guys and only say nice things, except occasionally Harry would make it all about him while he said something stupid and take over the stage, pushing the contestant out of the way
New judges please, old ones sucked. ,

  3. I really did not like Simon Crowell, Paula Abdul was ok, & Randy Jackson was the best. I would choose Randy Jackson, Keith Urban or Jennifer Lopez, & Carrie Underwood or Scotty Mccreery.

    1. randy Jackson, whose vocabulary at first good, but then just melted down to dog dog dog. Keith Urban who could not tell a contestant they were tone deaf, but only said the nicest things Jennifer lopez WHO CAN”T SING! and hogs the stage, Carrie is nice, too nice and is Scotty allowed to talk to gay men now? his mother would not let him in the past.
      please none of the above.

  4. Kelly Clarkson, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez as judges for American Idol for sure. And Ryan Seacrest must be back as host. He did an awesome job hosting all 15 seasons. I watched it religiously beginning with Season 3 when Fantasia Barrino won. Or, the best choice yet is bring back the original crew of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson as judges and Ryan Seacrest as host, without a doubt.

  5. The most talented, humble, funny, personality plus contestant to ever appear on the show, namely Fantasia. She would be pure gold!
