The first group of 12 acts performed live for the first quarterfinal stage of “America’s Got Talent” on Tuesday night. Overnight viewers voted for their favorites and Wednesday evening in the first live results show of the season only seven acts advanced to the semifinals. Last year’s champion Grace VanderWaal was also on hand for a special performance. So which acts earned enough votes to perform again in the next round? Check out our recap of the live results show below and then sound off in the comments about the night’s most shocking snubs.
To kick off the results, host Tyra Banks announced that the five acts that brought in the most votes overnight would automatically advance to the semis, leaving seven in jeopardy. But the first set of results to be revealed were the sixth, seventh and eighty place vote-getters who would be eligible for the Dunkin’ Save, a live vote to take place during the rest of the show, with the most popular earning a sixth spot in the next round. The three acts up for the Dunkin Save were Christian Guardino, Just Jerk and Yoli Mayor.
With nine acts left on stage awaiting their own fate, Tyra asked Artyon and Paige and In the Stairwell to step forward. Of those two acts, the all male a cappella group advanced while the young dancers were eliminated. Next up were The Singing Trump, Puddles Pity Party and Preacher Lawson, with the stand up comedian Lawson named as one of the Top 5 and the two singing comedians dropped. Then, in a break from the results, last year’s winner VanderWaal took the stage with her ukulele to perform her single “Moonlight” which she also wrote.
Darci Lynne Farmer and Angelica Hale were then brought to the stage expecting to hear that only one of them would be advancing, but instead Tyra revealed that both of them were voted through straight to the semis. That left Bello Nock and Billy and Emily England on stage to hear their own results. Based on America’s votes, the final act voted into the semifinals was the sibling roller skaters while daredevil Bello was once again sent home.
The three acts up for the Dunkin’ Save returned to the stage to hear the results of the live vote where only one of them would advance and the other two would be left in limbo for the judges to save. Earlier in the evening, Christian was shown to be polling about 40% of the vote and sure enough he maintained that lead and earned the Save.
At the close of the show, torn between the Korean dance crew Just Jerk and the solo singer Yoli Mayor the judges each cast a vote. Heidi’s vote went to Yoli, Mel’s went to Just Jerk, Simon’s went to Yoli and Howie’s went to Just Jerk. With a tie, Yoli was named the semi-finalist based on the tiebreaker of having earned more audience votes overnight.
That means the first group of semi-finalists are In the Stairwell, Preacher Lawson, Darci Lynne Farmer, Angelica Hale, Billy and Emily England, Christian Guardino and Yoli Mayor. Next Tuesday, the second live show will help determine a new group of semi-finalists between Johnny Manuel, Light Balance, Demian Aditya, Merrick Hanna, Celine Tam, Pompeyo Family, Evie Clair, Brobots and Mandroidz, The Masqueraders, Eric Jones, Mirror Image and Mandy Harvey.
