Annette Bening could win a first ever Oscar for her performance in “20th Century Women,” which opens wide on Friday. To celebrate this award-winning performer, we took a look back through his 30-year career to find 10 of her best roles in our new photo gallery (tour above).
In “20th Century Women,” Bening plays Dorothea, a single mother struggling to raise her teenage son (Lucas Jade Zumann) in 1970s Southern California. She’s already competed at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards for the role, and is nominated at the Indie Spirits. Should she receive an Oscar nomination on Tuesday, January 24, she could ride a groundswell of support and reap somewhat of a career achievement award.
Bening has been nominated four times at the Academy Awards without a win: three times in Lead (“American Beauty” in 1999, “Being Julia” in 2004, and “The Kids Are All Right” in 2010), and once in Supporting (“The Grifters” in 1990). She received SAG prizes for Lead Actress and Ensemble for “American Beauty” and Golden Globes for Musical/Comedy Actress for “Being Julia” and “The Kids Are All Right.” Click through our photo gallery to find out if your favorite Bening performance made the cut.
