With nine BAFTA nominations including Best Film and a PGA bid, “Arrival” looks poised to have a strong showing at the Oscars. This Paramount release stars Amy Adams as a linguist recruited by the US Army to interpret alien languages when several space ships land around the world. Director’s Guild Awards nominee Denis Villeneuve and Writers Guild Awards contender Eric Heisserer, both of whom also received BAFTA noms, recently chatted with Gold Derby about their work on the film.
Villeneuve was initially attracted to the material because of, “what it was saying about the world, and the idea that in order to evolve as a species, we should find a new form of humility.” Heisserer reveals that when he first read Ted Chiang‘s short story “Story of Your Life,” “I was lured into the idea that there was going to be an intellectual story … I didn’t expect to feel as much as I did when I got to the end of the story, and that was really my prime motivation for adapting it.”
Among the below-the-line contenders, we spoke with editor Joe Walker, who is also BAFTA nominated, and producers Shawn Levy and Dan Levine.
