The British academy shifted its annual BAFTA Awards to take place before the Oscars a decade ago. While those competitive kudos are handed out in London in February, the Los Angeles branch of BAFTA doles out honorary Britannia Awards in October.
As that is just as awards season heats up, this ceremony is a key stop on the road to Oscar. This year’s ceremony is set for October 27 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. In making the announcement, Chantal Rickards, CEO of BAFTA LA, said, “After an overwhelmingly successful ceremony in 2016, we are looking forward to once again celebrating those among us who not only define excellence, but inspire others to do the same.”
Last year’s honorees included a trio of talents from the United Kingdom — Ricky Gervais (Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy), Felicity Jones (British Artist of the Year) and Ewan McGregor (Britannia Humanitarian Award) — as well as Ang Lee (John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing), Samuel L. Jackson (Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment) and Jodie Foster (Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film).
