The trailer for Episode 6 of the final season of “Bates Motel” offers the tantalizing possibility that we may see a version of the infamous “Psycho” shower scene next week. The episode is simply entitled “Marion” which refers to Rihanna‘s character introduced last week that was formerly played by Janet Leigh in “Psycho.” As film fans remember Marion Crane was murdered in her motel shower after she inadvertently charmed Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), thereby unleashing his murderous Mother alter ego. Above, watch the preview trailer for “Bates Motel” Season 5, Episode 6.
Similar incidents seem to be promised in this week’s promo which starts with Marion smashing the windows of a car and being offered help by Norman (Freddie Highmore). Norman then is seen receiving a frantic phone call from his half-brother Dylan (Max Thieriot) as to why Norman didn’t inform him of their mother’s death. Dylan has married former Bates Motel office clerk Emma (Olivia Cooke) and moved out of town, severing ties with his family. But not being informed of his mother’s death seems to still sting for Dylan, who has spent his life feeling excluded from the tight Norma/Norman relationship.
Norma (Vera Farmiga) appears in this episode after being mostly absent from last week’s show. (Interestingly Farmiga, the former star of the series will be submitted as a supporting player for this year’s Emmys.) Norma is again lurking about the Bates house and is informed by Norman that she needs to be there because of the girl who has checked into the motel.
Norman (as both himself and Norma) is then shown peeping into cabin one where Marion has just turned on the shower. The series again seems to be paying homage to the “Psycho” film by having Marion and Norman discuss their lives and parental relationships as the same characters did in the film. The clip ominously ends with Marion saying, “Parents can be a bitch” and Norman responding, “You have no idea.”
Rihanna reportedly has only been signed for two episodes so whether or not Marion once again meets an untimely end in the shower this week looks to be answered soon. Continue reading Gold Derby’s coverage of the end of the masterfully macabre series “Bates Motel” … and remember to call your mother.
