“Bates Motel” continued its final season Monday night with an episode entitled “Bad Blood.” The somewhat slow-paced hour spent a great deal of time in the infamous fruit cellar of the Bates’ household where Norman (Freddie Highmore) stores his late mother Norma’s (Vera Farmiga) body. The episode focused primarily on the plight of Caleb (Kenny Johnson), Norma’s brother and rapist who Norman/Norma has been keeping chained in the basement. Below, check out the Top 5 moments from “Bates Motel” Season 5, Episode 3.
Dinner for three — Norman serves dinner for Chick (Ryan Hurst) and Norma. Norman continues to believe that his mother is still alive and even expresses his happiness that Chick has found out his secret. The dinner though shows that it is really only Chick and Norman who are dining. Chick seems to be going along with the charade for reasons that will become clearer at the end of the episode.
Romero escapes — Sheriff Romero, who seems hellbent on avenging the murder of his wife Norma by Norman, is being transferred to a new prison when he overpowers the security guard and flees. Later, Romero tries to steal a car to get back to White Pine Bay but is shockingly shot by a young woman whose mother owns the car.
Madeline breaks down — Norman’s new friend Madeline (Isabelle McNally) turns up at the motel to apologize to Norman for trying to fix him up with another woman. She tearfully breaks down and confesses to Norman that she is very lonely in her marriage. Norman admits to Madeline that she reminds him of his mother. Madeline asks if that is a good thing or a bad thing and Norman assures her it’s good, but it remains to be seen if that is really true.
Chick’s motives are revealed — Chick has been strangely cooperative with Norman ever since last season’s finale when he discovered that Norman had stolen Norma’s body from its grave. Throughout this season, Chick has maneuvered to be around Norman by helping him with household chores but never seems to be bothered by Norman’s obviously illegal activities. The end of this episode saw Chick shopping for a typewriter and revealing to the sales clerk that he is writing a true crime story.
A major death — In the final moments of the hour, Caleb’s tortured life comes to an end not by Norma or Norman, but by Chick who accidentally hits him with his car. Caleb ended up in the road while fleeing from Norma who was trying to shoot him. Norman had wanted to let him Caleb go free but the Norma part of his personality was bent on revenge and wanted Caleb dead.
