‘Battle of the Sexes’ trailer: Emma Stone & Steve Carell hope to serve up Oscars in true sports story [WATCH]

“I’m done talking, let’s play,” says Emma Stone as tennis champ Billie Jean King in the new trailer for the Fox Searchlight film “Battle of the Sexes,” which was unveiled on Tuesday, May 16, along with a new poster. Watch the trailer above and check out the new artwork below. The film opens on September 22.

“Battle of the Sexes” tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between King and chauvinistic male tennis star Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell). The match became a focal point in the national debate over women’s equality. It became one of the most watched sports events in TV history.

The Oscars love a good sports story, as evidenced by past Best Picture winners “Rocky” (1976), “Chariots of Fire” (1981) and “Million Dollar Baby” (2004). And “Battle of the Sexes” comes with an awards-friendly pedigree. It’s directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who previously helmed the Best Picture nominee “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006). The screenwriter is Simon Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for writing “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) and was also nominated for his scripts for “The Full Monty” (1997) and “127 Hours” (2010).

The stars are awards favorites too. Stone just won Best Actress for her starring role in the musical “La La Land,” while Carell was previously nominated for Best Actor for playing another biographical role, homicidal millionaire John du Pont in “Foxcatcher” (2014). The cast also features Andrea Riseborough, Alan Cumming, Sarah Silverman and Elisabeth Shue.
