“Drugs, murder, and a dead body on our beach,” observes Dwayne Johnson in a new trailer for “Baywatch,” in which sexy beach lifeguards solve a crime by the ocean side. But Zac Efron wonders, “Am I the only one that thinks this is clearly a job for the police?” He must be new here. Watch the new trailer above.
Johnson stars as Mitch Buchannon, a devoted lifeguard who clashes with Matt Brody (Efron), an arrogant new recruit to the Baywatch team. But there’s a criminal plot they must uncover involving Victoria Leeds (“Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra). Also starring in the film are Alexandra Daddario as Summer Quinn, Ilfenesh Hadera as Stephanie Holden, and Kelly Rohrbach as C.J. Parker. It’s directed by Seth Gordon, who helmed “Horrible Bosses” (2011) as well as episodes of “The Office,” “Modern Family,” “Parks and Recreation” and “The Goldbergs” on TV.
“Baywatch” is itself based on a long-running TV series, the camp classic about heroic lifeguards that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1990 and then in syndication from 1991 to 2001. It ran for a remarkable 11 seasons consisting of 242 total episodes. David Hasselhoff played the Mitch Buchannon role on TV, and Matt Brody was played by David Charvet. The role of C.J. was made famous by Pamela Anderson, while Summer was originated by Nicole Eggert and Stephanie was portrayed by Alexandra Paul.
However kitschy it was the original “Baywatch” was a dramatic series, while the new film version is strictly a comedy that pokes fun at the original show’s parade of hunks and hotties solving beach crimes.
