Sunday’s BET Awards turned out to be the Bruno Mars show. This talented singer/songwriter kicked off the show with an electrifying performance of “Perm,” the latest single off of his chart-topping album “24K Magic.” Mars, who had lost all eight of his previous BET Awards bids, had a leading five nominations heading into the ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. While Mars ended up losing Album of the Year to Beyonce for “Lemonade,” he did prevail for Video of the Year for the title track to “24K Magic.” That disc is likely to be a strong contender for Mars at the upcoming Grammy Awards. He also picked up the prize for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist.
Leslie Jones hosted this year’s BET Awards. Following that opening by Mars, she delivered a monologue that made merry with many of those in attendance. The “SNL” funny lady readily admitted she didn’t know all of the famous faces looking up at her. And Jones revealed that she was worried that she was too old to connect with this hip crowd.
