March 10 marks the 20th anniversary of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which premiered on the WB network on this day in 1997. So is it time for a comeback? David Boreanaz, who played Angel, a vampire with a soul, recently nixed the idea of revisiting his former role, saying, “I have no problem with the cult audience, and I would totally get back into the genre, but I’m not a big reunion guy. I tend to like to go forward.” But the fans hope he’ll change his mind.
In our recent poll, we asked if the Scooby Gang should get back together and a whopping 72% of respondents say that they should. And there’s plenty of precedent. Netflix revived “Gilmore Girls” in 2016, “Twin Peaks” is getting a Showtime revival in 2017, and “Power Rangers” is getting a big-screen reboot that opens March 24. What’s old is new again! Of course, reviving “Buffy” does pose one unique challenge: while many of the characters are immortal, none of the actors are, so the passage of time poses problems if you’d like to play the same forever-young vampire 20 years later.
There’s a solution to this: you could always reboot the series with a brand new cast, but only 6% of readers support that option. And another 16% of readers don’t want the show revisited at all because it would risk tarnishing what came before. The last 6% of readers don’t want any more “Buffy” because they didn’t like the show in the first place — I guess you can’t please everyone, but the show apparently pleased 94% of you, which isn’t half bad.
The good news for fans is that the series didn’t end with the 2003 TV finale episode. The series continues in an official canonical comic book series that’s still running — season 11 began in November 2016. So do you think “Buffy” should make a comeback?
