‘Cash Cab’ puts Ben Bailey back in driver’s seat for reboot of Emmy champ

Five years after running out of gas, the game show “Cash Cab” is returning to the Discovery Channel later this year. We knew in March that the cablecaster was bringing this Daytime Emmy-winner back but only found out this week that original host Ben Bailey is also set to return.

The basic concept of the show, which ran from 2005 to 2012, remains the same. Bailey will be in a specially-fitted yellow cab, picking up passengers who are unaware that they are about to become contestants on a game show. As Bailey drives them to their destination, he gives them a chance to win money by answering trivia questions. However, three wrong answers gets them tossed to the curb. This time around, Bailey will occasionally have a celebrity riding shotgun.

Bailey was nominated as Best Game Show Host at the Daytime Emmy Awards for all seven season of the original run, winning in 2010, 2011 and 2013. And as a consulting producer of the program, he shared in its 2010 win as Best Game Show; he was not credited as such when the show prevailed in 2008 and 2009 so he didn’t get an Emmy then.

In a statement, Bailey, who will be an executive producer on this edition, said: “Holy #%$&!! Cash Cab is back!!! HUGE thanks to all the fans who pushed for the show (and for me) to come back! Never before has a comedian been so happy to go back to driving a cab. OMG I think I left the meter running!”
