‘Casual’ Emmy submissions: Oscar nominee Jason Reitman numbers among contenders

Hulu’s hit comedy series “Casual” returned on May 23 and kicked off season three with three episodes. The rest of the order of 13 episodes will air weekly thereafter. This scheduling is a smart move by the streaming service as the critically acclaimed show is airing new installments as Emmy voters mark their ballots this week and next.

“Casual,” which is executive produced by Oscar nominee Jason Reitman, tells the story of Alex (Tommy Dewey), a website founder  whose newly divorced sister Valerie (Michaela Watkins) moves into his home with her teenage daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr). While the first season, which was nominated at the Golden Globes, took a sharp look at modern dating, the second season delved deeper into the family’s struggles.

Critics hailed its deft blend of comedy and drama. The sophomore edition, which included the death of Alex and Valerie’s father Charles (Fred Melamed), earned an impressive score of 87% at Rotten Tomatoes and universal acclaim at MetaCritic, which translated into a score of 88.

Among the series’s 13 second season episodes, “Trivial Pursuit” is up for Best Directing by Reitman while “The Great Unknown” has been entered for Best Writing by series creator Zander Lehmann. Reitman helmed the first two episodes of each of the first two seasons and the last two of the third.

“Casual may also be a major player in music categories, but ballots are not available for those, since the voting process for those awards is different from most other races (more on that here). But you can see the rest of this year’s “Casual” Emmy contenders below.
