‘Churchill’ trailer: Brian Cox is riveting as Winston Churchill in his finest hours [WATCH]

John Lithgow could well win an Emmy for his portrayal of British prime minister Winston Churchill in “The Crown.” While that series focused on the early years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II that began in 1952, the finest hours for this veteran politician had been almost a decade earlier. Those are the subject of “Churchill,” a new film from Jonathan Teplitzky (“The Railway Man”) due out in June (watch the trailer above).

Golden Globe nominee Brian Cox (“Nuremberg”) plays Churchill in his first stint as the leader of the United Kingdom during World War II. He shepherded his country through its darkest days, as the Nazi threat of invasion loomed large. “Churchill” opens in June 1944 as the Allied forces are preparing to invade France and fight the Germans.

However, Churchill is haunted by the memories of the ill-fated invasion of Gallipoli in World War I that he had ordered in his capacity as First Lord of the Admiralty. He turns for support to his stalwart wife Clementine (Oscar nominee Miranda Richardson) as he negotiates the details of the D-Day invasion with General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Emmy nominee John Slattery).
