Comedy Guest Actor slugfest: Will Hugh Laurie (‘Veep’) win first-ever Emmy this year? [WATCH]

“This is a really good one, as we have three shows representing six nominations,” Rob Licuria readily admits in our video chat (watch above) about the competitive Best Comedy Guest Actor lineup at this year’s Emmys. Gold Derby senior editors Licuria and Marcus James Dixon are joined by contributing writers Zach Laws and Amanda Spears in our slugfest discussion of this tight Emmy race.

The category is stacked this year with Emmy favorites like former winners Tom Hanks and Lin-Manuel Miranda (both nominated for hosting “Saturday Night Live”) and previous nominees Dave Chappelle (also from “SNL”), Hugh Laurie (“Veep”) and Matthew Rhys (“Girls”), and new nominee Riz Ahmed (“Girls”). Ahmed is also nominated for Best Movie/Mini Actor for “The Night Of” this year, while Rhys also returns for a second time as Best Drama Actor for “The Americans.”

The big question in this race is whether the three “SNL” contenders will cancel each other out, opening up a clear pathway to victory for perennial Emmy bridesmaid Laurie to finally nab his first trophy. “The fact that he’s been nominated 10 times without a win, and he’s alone in this category without another ‘Veep’ guy stealing votes really, really helps him out,” Dixon argues.

Laws agrees, adding, “This has got to be Hugh Laurie. If he can’t win this year then he just might never win an Emmy. I can’t believe I have to say that High Laurie has never won an Emmy.”

On the other hand, Spears doesn’t buy the vote-splitting argument and says that Hanks is still out in front. “I think sketch for sketch, Tom Hanks is the choice,” she argues. “He had the best episode of the year.”
