After baseball player David Ross‘s energetic freestyle dance on Monday night’s “Dancing with the Stars” finals, judge Len Goodman said, “Week one I said, ‘Not a home run, but you got to first base.’ And every week after that I’ve been waiting for you to come out and knock it out of the park. The only thing missing was a beer and a hot dog. That was fantastic.” Watch Ross’s baseball-themed routine above.
Julianne Hough added, “That was so much fun. That’s exactly what a freestyle is about, what it should be on this show — entertaining. And you know what is so amazing about you? This show is about connection. We need connection and love in this world right now, and you give that to everybody.”
Bruno Tonioli told Ross, “We definitely had our money’s worth with you … The best-looking team ever, and perfectly in sync. Who could ask for anything more?” And Carrie Ann Inaba concluded, “Everyone has their own personal best, and it looks different obviously, but tonight I definitely feel you gave your personal best. Thanks for giving us the freestyle we wanted.”
Up until then Ross had never received a single 10 from the judges, but that freestyle surprisingly earned him 10s across the board for a perfect score of 40 out of 40. However, when it was combined with his first dance of the evening he was still left at the bottom of the leaderboard. But Ross has been a fan-favorite all season, advancing through the competition even while higher-scoring celebs were eliminated around him. Could he pull off a shocking upset victory by winning the Mirror Ball Trophy?
