Derek Hough took this season off from competing on “Dancing with the Stars,” but he returned on Monday, April 3, for a special performance with his sister Julianne Hough, who was also a pro dancer on the show before becoming a full-time judge. Their routine was a contemporary dance with a powerful emotional hook: it was inspired by the divorce of the Houghs’ parents. Derek Hough is a six-time winner of “DWTS’s” Mirror Ball Trophy, far more than any other pro dancer on the show. He’s not competing to win it again this season, but he could potentially win another Emmy for Best Choreography. He’s been a good luck charm for “DWTS” at the Emmys. He’s been nominated eight times for his work as a choreographer, and out of the show’s 16 total choreography noms, the only two wins were for him. He won on his own in 2013 for three dances: “Hey Pachuco,” “Para Los Rumberos” and “Walking on Air.” Then he won again in 2015 along with his sister Julianne and Tessandra Chavez for their “Elastic Heart” routine.
The Houghs’ performance on Monday night is taken from their upcoming touring show “Move – Beyond,” which starts in Akron, Ohio, on April 19.
