‘Dancing with the Stars’: Was it cruel to eliminate both Nikki Bella and Vanessa Lachey on Halloween? [WATCH]

The “Dancing with the Stars” contestants and the audience alike were blindsided when it was announced on “Halloween Night” that both Nikki Bella and Vanessa Lachey were eliminated from the competition. What made it shocking was that neither contestant knew there would be a double elimination until the moment host Tom Bergeron told them they were both going home. They were the last two celebs in jeopardy, and the expectation was that one of them would advance to the next round. Double eliminations are hardly unheard of on “DWTS,” but did the show go too far by pulling the rug out from under Bella and Lachey at the last possible moment? Jeffrey Kare, Cordell Martin, and I discuss that and more in our recent slugfest. Watch it above.

“That was a little cruel,” says Martin about the double-elimination reveal. “I would have preferred, if they wanted to make it a surprise to the contestants, that they would have announced it at the beginning of the show … It also cheated Nikki and Vanessa out of saying their final goodbyes since they were short on time.” Kare added, “It was very surprising, and I’m sure Nikki and Vanessa wish the wrong envelopes were handed out. I thought they both at least did solid jobs performing on [‘Halloween Night’].”

Bella and Lachey’s eliminations were also surprising in that they had relatively high scores on “Movie Night,” but they were eliminated anyway, which shows us that the dancers who were under them — Drew Scott, Victoria Arlen, and Frankie Muniz — must have had extremely strong fan support to overtake not one, but two high-scorers. That’s important to know for the rest of the competition. Since fan voting accounts for half of the results, maybe frontrunners Jordan Fisher and Lindsey Stirling aren’t so insurmountable after all.
