‘Dancing with the Stars’ upset in the making? Drew Scott could ‘sneak to the finals’ just like David Ross

“I want to say [Drew Scott will be eliminated], but knowing this show — and after last season, especially with David Ross — I would say don’t count him out,” warns Cordell Martin in our “Dancing with the Stars” video slugfest discussing week eight, “Trio Night.” Martin, Jeffrey Kare, and I discussed whether the judges might have been hoping to tip the scales with their surprisingly low scores for Scott’s dances, trying to ensure his elimination next Monday night in fifth place. But Scott’s fans may just keep him in the competition for the long haul. Watch our slugfest above.

Martin added, “We thought [Scott] had a strong chance of going home two weeks ago when he was at the bottom of the leaderboard, and he is still here, so I think those low scores the judges gave him could backfire on them and we could see a [Victoria Arlen] or heaven forbid a [Frankie Muniz] go home. I wouldn’t be surprised if Drew manages to sneak to the finals.”

That’s reminiscent of season 24 this past spring, when David Ross became the first Major League Baseball player ever to appear on the show. Based on the judges’ scores he was only the sixth best dancer of the season, but he still advanced all the way to the finals and even finished in second place, ahead of Normani Kordei who was the highest-scoring dancer of the season.

Ross was famously fun-loving and good-natured during on the show, inspiring passionate support from fans that carried him through the competition over higher-scoring rivals like Simone Biles and Nancy Kerrigan. Drew Scott has been similarly waging a charm offensive, and his dance skills may actually be better than Scott’s were, so maybe Martin is right that we should watch out for him to ambush the finals.
