“This is a very even cast. There’s not a huge number of ringers like it was last season. Usually there are two or three where it’s obvious that they’re going to dominate the competition,” says Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin about the unusually level playing field for season 25 of “Dancing with the Stars.” Martin, Jeffrey Kare, and I discussed the 13 celebrity contestants who were announced on September 6. Even sight unseen we already have opinions about who has what it takes to win the Mirror Ball Trophy. Watch our slugfest above for all our insights.
“Jordan Fisher might definitely be one of the frontrunners,” Martin explains, “but with him being a Disney star, oftentimes they don’t have the best track record in terms of winning or hitting that main demographic in terms of support [from audience voters].” Young stars with especially young core fan bases have had mixed results on the show — actor Jake T. Austin was the most recent, and he finished dead last in season 23. But other celebs with teen followings have been successful if they have the moves to back it up, like musician Riker Lynch, who finished a close second in season 20. And Fisher, a musical theater star with a gymnastics background, has a good chance of getting high scores for his ballroom dances.
Adds Kare, “If I had to pick a top three, at the moment I’d probably put Victoria, Nikki, and Jordan.” Victoria Arlen is a Paralympian who story of coming back from severe illness to become an athletic champion might inspire passionate viewer votes, the same way season 18 runner-up Amy Purdy did in. Nikki Bella is also an athlete, as well as a performer, having worked as a pro wrestler for the WWE.
And we agree that violinist Lindsey Stirling is another strong Mirror Ball contender. She has developed a passionate fan base from her YouTube channel and live performances, which already incorporate dance. Plus, she has previously appeared on “DWTS” as a musical guest.
