‘Dancing with the Stars’ brothers Maksim & Val Chmerkovskiy: Which pro is better, by the numbers

Brothers Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Val Chmerkovskiy have been staples of “Dancing with the Stars” for years, but which brother is better? Val leads two-to-one in terms of Mirror Ball Trophies, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. They have both been announced as competitors for season 25. Let’s consider their track records. Then vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which Chmerkovskiy you think is better.

Maks has been a “DWTS” pro on and off since season two, and he has competed in a total of 16 seasons, not counting the upcoming 25th season. Val didn’t joins the cast until season 13, but he has competed in every season since, for a total of 12. Just based on their individual results, Val clearly has the edge. Not only has he won the Mirror Ball Trophy twice (with Rumer Willis in season 20 and Laurie Hernandez in season 23), he has also finished in the top three seven times, so he has made the finals in more than half of his seasons on the show, and one of the times he missed (finishing fifth with Tamar Braxton in season 21) was only because his celeb withdrew due to illness.

Maks has won only once (with Meryl Davis in season 18), and he has only finished in the top three five times overall even though he has competed 33% more often than Val. So it looks pretty decisive decision for Val, but we haven’t considered one more crucial metric: how have the brothers done against each other? And here’s where things get interesting. They have only competed against each other in six seasons, and while Val has a better track record altogether, they’re dead-even when they go head-to-head.

Maks did far better than his little brother in season 13 (fourth place, compared to Val’s 11th place finish) and season 14 (fifth place, compared to Val’s 10th place finish). Then it flipped in season 15, when Val finished third and Maks was seventh.

But Maks came back in season 18 by winning with Davis; Val finished sixth. After that Maks took four seasons off, but Val has had the decisive advantage since his big brother returned. Val won season 23 with Hernandez (Maks finished ninth), and then Val finished third in season 24 (Maks finished eighth). So while Val has been the more successful competitor in general, it’s more or less a draw between him and Maks when they’re pitted against each other. Check out the complete track records of the battling Chmerkovskiys below, and make sure to vote in our poll.
