Fifth Harmony star Normani Kordei will be one of the few female pop group members to strap on her dancing shoes for “Dancing with the Stars.” Mel B. (Spice Girls), Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls), Chynna Phillips (Wilson Phillips) and Belinda Carlisle (The Go-Go’s) have all preceded Kordei as contestants on the show. In fact, Mel B. and Nicole Scherzinger both made it to the finals with Scherzinger smoking the competition with an unsurprising victory in season 10.
The new season starts on March 20, so before she and her competitors hit the dance floor let’s consider the pros and cons.
Normani is known for her dancing in Fifth Harmony, and she has several years of training. Aside from having the ability to handle difficult choreography, she probably has one of the bigger if not biggest fan bases out of all the contestants. Her group’s Twitter account has over three million followers alone!
Also, she’s paired with two-time and reigning “DWTS” champion Val Chmerkovskiy. With fan-favorites Mark Ballas and Derek Hough out for the season, Chmerkovskiy has become the face of “DWTS” essentially. With his popularity and Normani’s fan base and dance background, they could be a force to be reckoned with.
In interviews, Kordei can come off a bit shy and reserved. Although many viewers love to see good dancing, that often isn’t enough to win the competition. R&B star Mya (season nine) and Disney star Zendaya (season 16) were both the best dancers when they competed, but both came up short, losing to stars with more relatable personalities: Donny Osmond and Kellie Pickler, respectively.
Being paired with Chmerkovskiy is a pro for Normani, or could be a con as well. In the history of “DWTS” only three pros were able to win back to back Mirror Ball Trophies: Cheryl Burke was the first winning both season three and four with Emmitt Smith and Drew Lachey, followed by current “DWTS” judge Julianne Hough in seasons four and five with Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves, and Derek Hough in seasons 10 and 11 with Jennifer Grey and Scherzinger — and Hough again in seasons 16 and 17 with Pickler and Amber Riley.
