‘Dancing with the Stars’: Sasha Pieterse opened up about fat-shaming before triumphant samba [WATCH]

“I love the song because it really resonates with me about what I’ve been through and what I’m still going through,” said “Pretty Little Liars” star Sasha Pieterse about dancing a samba to the empowering “Most Girls” on “Dancing with the Stars” for “Latin Night.” She explained, “I gained 70-ish pounds over two years. It was really hurtful the way people reacted. People were saying stuff like, ‘She’s pregnant,’ ‘You’re fat.’ They were angry that I look like this. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through. I had no idea what was going on, and I didn’t have any way of solving it.”

But it wasn’t just about the fat-shaming. She added, “Very recently I was diagnosed with PCOS: polycystic ovary syndrome —  a hormone imbalance. And finally I knew why this was happening to me, Now I see results. I think most importantly I’m feeling like me again. Being on the show I’ve lost over 15 pounds. It’s not an easy road, but being able to focus on getting myself healthy again and the fact that I’m seeing results now and getting better is all I can ask for.”

She could also ask for high scores from the judges, and she got those too. Len Goodman said, “I liked it. There was plenty of samba content in there. you came out and had a little bit of sparkle going on in your performance, which I enjoyed watching very much.” Bruno Tonioli added, “So pretty in pink, you are such a lovely dancer. You have such a good feel for the music.” And Carrie Ann Inaba concluded, “You were on fire. I think ‘most girls’ are now going, ‘I want to be like you.'” Pieterse received two 7s and an 8 for a total of 22 out of 30 — not her highest score, but good enough to make the top five on “Latin Night.”
