Olympic gymnast Simone Biles is still the frontrunner to win the Mirror Ball Trophy on “Dancing with the Stars” this season according to our week-two racetrack odds. We’ve been predicting season 24 since the cast was announced on March 1, and Biles was the favorite before she even set foot on the dance floor, but since getting the highest judges’ score last Monday night for her tango she has widened her lead.
As of this writing Biles gets leading odds of 8/15, up from 2/3 this time last week. That translates to a 66% chance of victory. However, she’ll need to watch out for football player Rashad Jennings, who was an underdog last week in eighth place with 100/1 odds but now leaps into second place with 9/1 odds. That’s because he surprised the judges and viewers alike with his cha cha, which put him just one point shy of Biles on the leaderboard.
Maybe we shouldn’t have been surprised by Jennings’s stellar performance, though. Football players have a great track record on “DWTS,” accounting for three previous winners: Emmitt Smith (season three), Hines Ward (season 12) and Donald Driver (season 14). Last season another NFL star, Calvin Johnson, competed and finished a strong third.
Jennings’s rise means a drop for “Glee” actress Heather Morris to third place with 11/1 odds. She has lost significant ground from last week when she was a close second to Biles with 10/3 odds. The judges admired her Viennese waltz, but her scores put her in a tie for third place on the leaderboard with figure skater Nancy Kerrigan and baseball player David Ross. Morris has more dance experience than any of the other stars, having performed with Beyonce and competed on “So You Think You Can Dance.” That means she’s capable of stellar routines week in and week out, but it also means the expectations for her are higher and the judges might hold her to a higher standard.
Bull rider and model Bonner Bolton holds steady in fourth place, but his odds have actually improved from week to week, from 33/1 to 20/1. That’s despite finishing ninth on the judges’ leaderboard for his cha cha. But the judges saw potential in him even if he didn’t fulfill that potential in his first dance, and the hunky cowboy’s routine was the most watched online, which may indicate strong fan support.
Rounding out the top five is Normani Kordei with 20/1 odds. Last week she ranked third with odds of 10/1. The Fifth Harmony star had the unenviable task of performing first in the season premiere, and the judges scored her conservatively, leaving her in the middle of the pack. But Fifth Harmony has a rabid fan base, and our readers thought Kordei had the best dance in week one. Assuming she doesn’t have to perform first every week she’s likely to see a bump in her scores and possibly in our standings as well.
