When season 25 of “Dancing with the Stars” concluded on November 21, host Tom Bergeron made a surprising announcement about the future of the show. The 26th season of the reality competition series airing in the spring would have two twists. First, it would include only athletes among the contestants. Second, it would last only four weeks. We asked our readers what they thought of the idea, and their responses were decidedly mixed. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
Only one third of our readers (34%) were unabashedly enthusiastic about the idea. And there’s certainly reason to be optimistic. Sports stars have often demonstrated the athleticism and stamina they need to win: 10 out of 25 Mirror Ball Trophy winners have come from the world of sports, most recently gymnast Laurie Hernandez in season 23. Another 36% of respondents were ambivalent, saying they might or might not watch the mini-season. The last 30% don’t like the idea at all.

Jill P: “I’m not sure what to think about all sports people. Would it only be guys or would there be girls competing? Sounds like it’s already in the plans. ‘DWTS’ hasn’t let us down yet, so we will hope for the best. We never miss a show. Keep up the good work.”
Linda J Eddy: “No, please. After not missing a single season, you will finally have lost me.”
Susan: “Not a good idea, won’t be watching next season, and four weeks is too short. They better think twice about this.”
Ann: “A lot of people including myself truly enjoy this show. ‘DWTS’ is a feel good show. It’s not that it’s just athletes, it’s the fact that it will only be four weeks. I’m a former ‘American Idol’ fan and I would much rather watch ‘DWTS.'”
J Beas: “It takes more than four weeks to get dialed into which contestant I’m gonna be pulling for, and more than four weeks for a frontrunner to emerge into their own.”
