Gymnast Simone Biles opened and closed the show on “Dancing with the Stars” on Monday night. For “Boy Bands vs. Girl Groups” night, she went first with a samba to Destiny’s Child‘s “Survivor,” and then she returned to the dance floor at the end of the evening with her fellow female celebs Nancy Kerrigan, Normani Kordei and Heather Morris for team dances. Neither routine elicited her best scores, but she nevertheless received praise from the judging panel.
Len Goodman especially admired her execution of samba technique: “You did promenade runs and counter promenade runs, and you fixed a spin in there,” he said. “That shows how much control you have over your legs, feet and body. I thought that was terrific.” Bruno Tonioli added, “One thing is certain: your future is set in gold. You’re not a child anymore. You’re a young woman glowing with confidence.”
Carrie Ann Inaba thought Biles’s performance was “sexy in the way that it should be … You are such a powerful and poignant performer.” And guest judge Nick Carter concluded, “What I love is that song ‘Survivor’ is a representation of who you are. You are a powerful woman, and you showed us what it’s all about in that routine.” Unfortunately, most of the judges noticed slight errors in her timing, which probably cost Biles a perfect score. She received 9s from Inaba, Goodman and Tonioli, and an 8 from Carter, for a total of 35 out of 40. That placed her fourth on the judges’ leaderboard.
