“It wasn’t as surprising as Heather Morris getting eliminated,” says Gold Derby contributor Jeffrey Kare about the unexpected ouster of gymnast Simone Biles during the “Dancing with the Stars” semifinals. “Everything’s down to the wire since there were only four left … I at least feel a little better now about predicting Normani to win.” Watch our video recap above.
Biles’s elimination leaves singer Normani Kordei to compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy against football player Rashad Jennings and baseball player David Ross. Kordei and Jennings have seemed like strong contenders all season, but hardly anyone would have expected Ross to overtake opponents like Biles, Heather Morris, and Nancy Kerrigan to reach the finals. “People always have to root for an underdog, and he fits the mold of an underdog,” says Kare about Ross’s appeal to fan voters. It was the viewers who have kept him alive this long, since he has scored lower than some of of his eliminated rivals in recent weeks.
“Now I’m just rooting for Normani for the win,” Kare concludes about the top three contestants. He’ll get his wish according to the initial predictions of our users, who give Kordei overwhelming odds of 1/5, which translated to an 83% chance of taking home the Mirror Ball Trophy. But in a season with so many high-scoring contestants being knocked out of the competition, you can never be too sure.
