On Monday night’s “Dancing with the Stars” the remaining eight celebs split off into teams of four to perform freestyle group dances inspired by boy bands and girl groups. But there was a twist: right before the two teams performed, host Tom Bergeron announced that the entire men’s team was safe, while the entire women’s team (Simone Biles, Nancy Kerrigan, Normani Kordei and Heather Morris) was in jeopardy and one of them would be eliminated at the end of the night. That turned out to be Morris in a shocker for the ages. The women still managed to outperform the men based on the judges’ scores (34 out of 40, just one point higher than the fellas), but the comments from the judges were decidedly mixed. Did the shocking results throw the ladies off their game?
“I loved that you kind of covered girl bands through the decades, the different styles of performances from The Chiffons to up-to-date Fifth Harmony,” said Bruno Tonioli. And guest judge Nick Carter thought it was “amazing. I loved it. You were well choreographed. It was very entertaining.” Both Carter and Tonioli gave Team Girl Group 9s.
But Carrie Ann Inaba was “underwhelmed.” She explained, “You guys are so incredible. I expected you to be fierce because you are all so fierce … I don’t think it was your best dancing. It didn’t feel like it all came together as a group.” Len Goodman agreed with Inaba, saying, “Your dancing was probably a little higher than the guys. However, I found the guys’ routine more entertaining. There was a lot of sitting down, a lot of messing about. It was what it was.” Inaba and Goodman gave the ladies 8s.
