Week three of “Dancing with the Stars” was the show’s first ever “Vegas Night,” and the performances had me wondering, is singer Normani Kordei this year’s Nicole Scherzinger? Back in season 10, Scherzinger went from a member of the music group Pussycat Dolls to Mirror Ball champion. And now Fifth Harmony member Kordei could be moving in the same direction. She performed a sexy foxtrot with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy and finished on top of the judges’ leaderboard for the second week in a row with the highest score posted this season so far. She received two 8s and two 9s from the judges for a total of 34 out of 40. Is she the new frontrunner for season 24?
Kordei’s top score took our users by surprise. When we predicted who would be the judges’ favorite for the night she ranked second with 7/2 odds, which translated to only a 24% chance of topping the leaderboard. We had thought gymnast Simone Biles would return to the top after getting the high score in week one. Biles had 6/5 odds, or a 42% chance of winning the night with her quickstep. But just like last week Biles ended up in fourth place, though with a still-impressive total score of 32 out of 40.
Biles finished just one point behind figure skater Nancy Kerrigan and actress Heather Morris (33 out of 40) after judge Carrie Ann Inaba deducted a point from Biles’s score for an unauthorized lift. Inaba also took Kordei and reality star Erika Jayne to task for perceived lifts, though she was the only judge to do so.
The rest of the night’s predictions were easier, which was bad news for Spanish entertainer Charo. Our odds correctly forecast that she would be eliminated (4/7 odds, 61% chance) even though she didn’t get the lowest judges’ score last week. Actor and former pro wrestler Mr. T had the lowest score, but he was spared elimination by fans voting at home.
Mr. T had the lowest score again this week (24 out of 40). Our odds correctly predicted that outcome as well (1/3 odds, 74% chance), but our users had a good chance of anticipating the lowest scorer no matter what because three contestants tied for that unfortunate distinction. Charo and bull rider Bonner Bolton also scored 24 from the judges. We had ranked Charo in second place in our predictions (11/2 odds, 17% chance), but literally none of our users expected Bolton’s fall from grace. He had 100/1 odds of getting the lowest score, which translated to a 0.6% chance of landing at the bottom.
Finally, most of our users were right that the judges wouldn’t give out any perfect 10s, though they came close a few times. Morris, Biles, Kerrigan and Kordei all received 9s for the first time this season. The outcome of no perfect 10s had overwhelming 2/7 odds, or a 75% chance of coming to pass.
In our weekly predictions contest, an impressive eight users scored 100% by correctly answering all four of our prediction questions: who would get the high score (Kordei), who would get the low score (Bolton, Charo or Mr. T), who would be eliminated (Charo), and how many 10s the judges would give out (Zero). Those users were KING, hplummy68, Stacii Edge, benutty, brima531, Luis VigAirio, Andrew Cunningham and David Hodali. Of those eight, KING is at the top of our leaderboard because he got the most favorable odds when he locked in those predictions and placed his 500-point big bets on Charo’s elimination and zero perfect 10s when they were at 2/1 odds, resulting in a combined 2,000-point payout.
