Daniel Day-Lewis & Lesley Manville (‘Phantom Thread’) on playing siblings: ‘We grew up together’ [WATCH]

“We grew up together, but separately,” said Daniel Day-Lewis about starring in “Phantom Thread” opposite Lesley Manville and forging a bond with her as on-screen siblings. “We share a lot of the same mates and come from the same place, and I had always hoped to work with Lesley at some point … Strangely, I don’t know how it is that you believe a person can quite easily be your sister. It never occurred to me that Lesley couldn’t be my sister.” Watch them discuss their on-screen relationship above.

Day-Lewis stars in “Phantom Thread” as Reynolds Woodcock, a temperamental fashion designer in 1950s London whose life is overturned when he meets Alma (Vicky Krieps), whom he falls in love with and who inspires his work. Manville is just as consistent a presence in his life as his sister Cyril. “We didn’t know each other,” said Manville. “We met in London, and then a lot of texts ensued, some of them naughty, fleshing out the early days of Cyril and Reynolds. It was kind of a strange, hybrid way of getting Reynolds and Cyril off the ground. We had this kind of banter between us.”

Phantom Thread” is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, a six-time Oscar nominee who has been cited by the academy for his screenplays for “Boogie Nights” (1997), “Magnolia” (1999), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Inherent Vice” (2014), and also for directing and producing “There Will Be Blood.” But he has yet to win in any category. “Blood” starred Day-Lewis, who won his second of three Best Actor Oscars for that role. The celebrated actor is reportedly retiring from acting after “Phantom Thread,” so academy voters might want to take this last opportunity to reward him.
