Denzel Washington may have given one of the performances of his lifetime in “Fences,” a big-screen adaptation of August Wilson‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning play that already brought him Broadway’s Tony Award. To celebrate this veteran thespian, we took a look back through his 30-plus-year career to find 15 of his best roles in our new photo gallery (tour above).
In “Fences,” which he also directed, Washington plays Troy, an African American father struggling against race relations in 1950s Pittsburgh while trying to raise his family. For the film version released on Christmas Day, the actor has contended already at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. If he wins his first SAG prize on January 29, he could well be on his way to his third Oscar.
Washington previously won Best Actor for “Training Day” (2001) and Best Supporting Actor for “Glory” (1989). He was also nominated for “Cry, Freedom” (Best Supporting Actor, 1987), “Malcolm X” (Best Actor, 1992), “The Hurricane” (Best Actor, 1999), and “Flight” (Best Actor, 2012).
