Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind “Minions,” “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Sing,” recently released its second full trailer for the latest film in its biggest franchise: “Despicable Me 3,” which reintroduces us to reformed supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), who exclaims, “I can’t wait to meet my brother!” after learning that he has a twin, Dru (also voiced by Carell). Will his charming sibling coax him into returning to a life of crime? Watch the new trailer above.
The original “Despicable Me” was a hit when it was released in 2010, earning strong reviews (72 on MetaCritic) and $543 million at the worldwide box office (including $251 million domestic), but it was snubbed for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Nevertheless, it was an unqualified success. However, “Despicable Me 2” blew that out of the water in 2013. The critical consensus wasn’t quite as strong, though still quite positive (62 on MetaCritic), but it was a box office giant with $970 million grossed worldwide (including $368 million domestic), which was a huge leap up from the original film. And it even picked up two Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Happy” by Pharrell Williams).
Critics weren’t as fond of the “Despicable” spinoff, “Minions,” in 2015, but it further improved on the franchise’s financial fortunes, taking in a remarkable $1.15 billion worldwide ($336 million domestic). Does that mean we can expect even more from “Despicable Me 3”? And do you think it will win over critics again like the first two films? It opens in theaters on June 30.
